The BMW X1 will be an important player in the Bavarian's line-up. Compact SUVs and CUVs are all the rage at the moment and makers like Audi (Q5), Mercedes (GLK-Class) and Lexus (RX) can't seem to produce enough of them. As the market increasingly moves towards all-utility vehicles, manufacturers can do nothing else but feed this monster.

Enter the X1, along side the new X3, the popular X5 and unappreciated X6. This entry level BMW will strike a cord with drivers and lovers of the brand from coast to coast. In fact, it may even sway consumers away from the other brands as BMW is always high on the coveted list.

Available since late 2009 in Europe and other market, the X1 has already found 115,000 new homes. In Canada, no predictions have been made however we can easily imagine that 5,000 units, or more, will be delivered in the coming year.

Powering the new X1 is the first 4-cylinder engine in a BMW since the 1998 Z3 and 318i. This turbocharged 2.0L mill is not, we repeat, not a lesser engine. It will develop 241 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. These numbers will propel the X1 to 100 km/h in only 6.5 seconds! And best of all, it will consume, on average, no more than 8L of fuel per 100 km.

As a side-note, expect this powertrain to find its way under the bonnet of many future BMWs including the 1 and 3-Series as well as the Z4.

The X1 will feature the usual barrage of equipment and accessories we've come to expect from BMW including more safety gizmos than in most commercial planes. As well, BMW's xDrive AWD system will be standard.

The compact Sports Activity Vehicle will go on sale in Canada in late spring 2011 (as a model year 2012). Pricing and additional technical details will be announced closer to launch.
